BIOGRAPHY

Artist / Calligrapher
KOKI SUGITA
KOKI SUGITA is a Japanese artist born in Miyazaki, Japan. After graduating from the Faculty of Engineering at Kagoshima University, he began his artistic practice with calligraphy. His engineering background and research into Japanese culture, embodiment, and spirituality have led him to develop a multidisciplinary practice spanning calligraphy, painting, sculpture, installation, and performance.
His work explores how different people, materials, cultures, histories, bodies, and spaces can coexist, encounter one another, and generate new relationships while retaining their differences. He refers to this ongoing practice as Ayelu (和える).
Calligraphy remains a central part of his practice, approached not only as written language but also as gesture, movement, material, and visual form. His work continues to cross boundaries between traditional Japanese culture, contemporary art, technology, and social research.
Sugita has exhibited in Japan and internationally, and his works are held in collections in the United States, including the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art and The SPC Foundation.
