INTRODUCTION
Thank you very much for visiting Regnum Court Omiya.
We are currently presenting the solo exhibition *untranslatable – 代替不可能*.
KOKI SUGITA (1983–) began his career as a self-taught calligrapher in 2006, while studying at the Faculty of Engineering at Kagoshima University. At the time, as he continued his research into art, he began to question his fascination with Western culture. This led him to ask, “What is art as a Japanese person?” and ultimately inspired him to choose calligraphy as his means of artistic expression.
After graduating, he began working in the streets and later developed his practice through residencies and site-specific productions at shrines. In 2013, he held his first solo exhibition at a gallery in New York. Since then, he has built an international career as a calligrapher through exhibitions at facilities of the Embassy of Japan in the United States, acquisitions by American museums, and appearances at diplomatic events such as the G20. His works have also been collected by, and he has collaborated with, major companies in Japan and abroad, including Van Cleef & Arpels, Hilton, and TOSHIBA.
Throughout his career, Sugita has continued to explore Japanese culture and tradition, while also investigating the influence of art history and calligraphy on contemporary art. Drawing on academic papers and literature from both Japan and abroad, he has pursued his own approach to artistic expression.
In his practice, Sugita places great importance on reflecting the traditional spirituality of the East while expressing respect for the surrounding environment and contemporary spaces. Rooted in tradition, he seeks to create new meanings by engaging with both the character of a place and the contemporary world.
In this exhibition, titled *untranslatable*, Sugita presents works that explore postwar Japan and themes such as Westernization and dyslexia, while responding to the concept of *wabi-sabi* embodied by Regnum Court Omiya.
