Various things and affairs are intricately intertwined in our world. Are we, who live in such a world, correctly perceiving the intricately intertwined world? Are we accepting only one aspect of it?

Let us consider the concept of love. The dictionary says, “A feeling of strong attraction to something, recognizing its value. A heart that cares for and adores. The heart that adores something as something precious.” It is not the only thing that love produces. But that is not all that love produces. Sometimes love is “a feeling that strongly pulls us away from something without recognizing its value. Hate, contempt, envy.” Sometimes love produces things that are far removed from love, such as hatred, contempt, envy, and so on.

What I am confronting is our perception that has become trapped in a monistic concept. I want to see the world that appears when we open up our closed perception.

For example, in “THE PRESENCE,” a work using stainless steel as the material, you will notice what the mirror surface creates. There, you can see yourself and others, the real world and the virtual world, East and West, and so on. As we can see in the reflection of ourselves, or others, in the mirror, they are in a sense identical, despite their opposites. Thus, relative to each other without denying each other, they create their own meanings.

The closed view of the world is not confined to everyday life. It has also had a profound impact on art history. In Western art, painting created space. Even abstract and conceptual paintings have been understood as pictorial space. But is painting only about space? It is not only letters that are painted in calligraphy. It is a painting that creates letters and space at the same time.

Through the creation of these works of art, I want to accept everything and remove the judgments that have already been given to us. I believe that by doing so, we can rethink various common sense and concepts of contemporary society and see a world full of possibilities.



There is no doubt that my life has greatly influenced my expression.

At a very young age, I experienced my parents’ divorce and remarriage, and bullying from my older brother and his friends. There were several times when I felt like I was going to die, and I asked myself, “Was it right that I was born?” and “Is it okay to be alive?” At the age of 19, he experienced flashbacks to his childhood when he witnessed two suicides in just seven days.

It was during these difficult times that I came across Basquiat’s films. I was impressed by his way of life, and through it I learned about other artists and became interested in art. Around the same time, I was greatly influenced by activists and artists who focused on social issues, such as Yoko Ono. Then, through his active involvement in the community regarding the Iraq War and environmental issues, he met a former refugee woman from Uganda and realized the potential and importance of art in society.

I began studying art to become an expressive person, but I sometimes felt contradicted by Japanese art, which had lost its uniqueness. This led me to consider my identity as a Japanese person, and I decided to use “calligraphy” as a medium of expression. First, I began the act of writing on the street, using “words” as a weapon, similar to graffiti as an expression drawn on the street.

In contemplating my identity, I could not stop my interest in traditional Japanese culture. Therefore, I stayed at shrines and spent many nights at shrines and temples to explore the relationship between Eastern art and religion as part of my research on Japanese culture, and continued to draw calligraphy. There, he came face to face with the state of nothingness in Eastern thought, and began to create works of art. Thus, “accepting and affirming existence” became the core of his expression.

As I continued to create, the idea of “accepting and affirming existence” brought me face to face with things that I could not face before. I have also faced Western art and incorporated it into my own expression. These changes have made me put forth as my expression that I am not bound by any one thought or concept, but am aware of multiple perspectives. Therefore, through my work, I hope to show the potential of all beings and express the beauty and splendor that can be seen by accepting them.
